Why you should definitely go to Shrine Mont

Let me tell you about Shrine Mont, that magical little slice of heaven tucked away at the foot of a mountain. Over the years, it’s become my go-to escape for a lot of reasons. Before kids, I mastered the art of “porch surfing”—a charming activity where you hop from one porch to another, chatting with whoever happens to be sitting there. Admittedly, I was the new person at the church, so I didn’t really know anyone. But the great thing about Shrine Mont is that everyone’s always ready for a chat, so it was both normal and welcomed.

Fast forward to when I was pregnant (but not allowed to tell anyone). I remember wondering how I was going to sneak in naps or avoid the temptation of shared wine. Turns out, lots of people nap and don’t drink! No one even noticed I was missing. Victory!

When the kids were small, my friend Tom and I were tasked with running the children’s program. Neither of us had a clue what we were doing, but hey, it turned out to be great fun! As the years passed and the kids grew older, we learned what they loved most about Shrine Mont: the freedom. The glorious, unstructured freedom to roam without the worry of getting truly lost. (The mountain curves around the grounds so they’re never far from safety.)

So, have you ever thought about going to Shrine Mont, but just haven’t gotten around to it? Well, let me be your unofficial tour guide and convince you it’s time.

Amy Miller, Shrine Mont Planning Committee

  • Shrine Mont is a stunning, peaceful retreat that’s been around since 1919. It’s made up of a historic hotel, cozy houses, and little apartment-style buildings. Located at the end of a road, it’s nestled right up against a mountain—and beautiful. The grounds boast a labyrinth, the Stations of the Cross, and even an outdoor shrine that serves as the cathedral of the Diocese of Virginia. There are hikes for all levels (from “I’m out of shape” to “I may never walk again”), babbling brooks, and even a spacious playground. Whether you’re seeking serenity or a bit of adventure, you’ll find it here.

  • Well, aside from exploring the grounds, there are a few key activities you’ll want to engage in: napping (which is an art form here), reading (because the environment practically begs you to), porch-hopping (the local social sport), and, of course, chatting with whoever is staying in your house. You can get lost in the woods—and find your way back (it’s part of the charm). And if you’re feeling active, there are hills to climb. Oh, and did I mention the fire? The cabins come stocked with wood for the ultimate fire-building experience and we usually have a nice community bonfire on Saturday night.

  • Ah, yes. The dreaded question. Here’s the truth: Don’t ask. Part of the magic of Shrine Mont is the blessed absence of connectivity. Unplug. Unwind. Seriously. Resist the temptation to trek to the hotel lobby for the one spot with Wi-Fi or climb to the top of the back hill for the best cell service. Leave your digital devices behind (or at least put them on airplane mode). Bring your family, find a sitter for your pets, and rediscover what it’s like to have an uninterrupted conversation. And if you’re desperate for a book, no worries—there’s a whole shelf of free and dollar books onsite! But, yes, the wifi in the hotel is reliable and fast enough to hold a zoom conference, if something comes up late on a Friday.

  • The important stuff! Meals are included, and coffee flows 24/7 in the hotel. Several joys are to be discovered and discussed in the family-style meals. Have you had a butt bun? Come to Shrine Mont and you will. Do you like sugary bar-b-que? Discuss. Should the stewed tomatoes be on top of or beside the meatloaf? What is the ideal mashed potato-to-gravy ratio? You can also partake in all you can eat ice—which, let’s face it, is a crucial part of any retreat experience. And porch visiting? It’s practically a pastime. You’ll be offered all sorts of snacks and drinks as you hop from one friendly porch to the next. Each house has a kitchen-ish space with a fridge (and, if you’re lucky, a microwave). Some even have their fridges…outside. Because why not?

  • I get it—this is a church retreat, right? But here’s the thing: Shrine Mont’s motto is “A place apart” and it is not your typical retreat. Shrine Mont is about finding comfort on your terms: Whatever your relationship with God or the church, you belong here.  Many come to Shrine Mont to find God in nature or among friends. If you are so inclined, there are plenty of opportunities for religious study: Compline, the Saturday morning program and Sunday morning worship are just a few optional activities. And there are many other organized activities—like pickleball and hiking—with no religious program. You can even soak in the beauty of the place on your own or connect with others without a formal program—I have done it—and that’s perfectly fine. If you do choose to participate, you’ll find that the services are engaging, interactive, and a great way to meet new people.

Please join us this year! I promise you’ll be greeted with a refreshing beverage upon your arrival on Friday night. So go ahead—consider attending this weekend of rest, relaxation, and yes, maybe a bit of spiritual renewal.

So, what are you waiting for? Pack your bags (and your sense of adventure) and come experience Shrine Mont for yourself!
