What can Bonhoeffer’s life and theological work tell us about “the prophetic path”?
During the Easter season, we will gather for a virtual Christian Education series led by parishioner and Bonhoeffer scholar, Dr. Victoria Barnett. Sessions will be offered at 10 AM on April 19, 26, and May 3. Information to connect with zoom, either electronically or with a dial tone phone are below.
“75 years ago this month the German pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer was executed at the age of 39 by the Nazis for his ties with the German resistance. There is a statue of him, one of ten statues of modern martyrs, above the Great West Door of Westminster Abbey. Because of his Christian witness against National Socialism, he is sometimes regarded as a modern prophet and he left a rich body of theological writings that are still read today. What can Bonhoeffer’s life and theological work tell us about “the prophetic path”? We will explore the aspects of Bonhoeffer’s life and writings that give insight into what it means to be a “prophet” in the modern world.”
Dr. Barnett was Director of the Programs on Ethics, Religion and the Holocaust at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. She is also one of the general editors of the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works, the English translation series of Bonhoeffer’s complete works being published by Fortress Press.
