Bridges to Independence
Bridges to Independence, established in 1985, helps families experiencing homelessness, housing instability, or systemic poverty to move toward empowerment and stability. Core programming includes operating Arlington County’s largest emergency family shelter, providing housing through a Rapid Rehousing model, offering referral services through a Community Services Center in Green Valley, and providing supportive service programming such as workforce development, youth development, and case management.
Engagement Opportunities:
Bridges to Independence brings together youths (typically about 10) with volunteers each Wednesday evening to enjoy learning something new.

For the holidays, we collected diapers gift cards to support Bridges’ families.
In late 2023, the CEO of Bridges, Fraiser Murdoch, spoke at the St Michael’s coffee hour following the 9:30am service. He shared with us many unique challenges for families facing homelessness, including the lack of affordable childcare.
