Governance of St. Michael's is the responsibility of the Rector and Vestry, in accordance with the Constitution and Canons of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia. The Vestry has also chartered a number of committees to assist with governance and stewardship at St. Michael's.
Vestry Lay persons who are confirmed adult communicants in good standing of the church are eligible to serve on the Vestry of St. Michael's, which consists of up to twelve members. Vestry members are elected at the St. Michael's annual meeting to serve three year terms, and approximately one-third of the Vestry is elected each year. Vestry members may not serve two terms in succession.
Finance Committee The St. Michael's Finance Committee provides continuity and oversight of the financial operations of St Michael’s, advising the Vestry of St Michael’s on budget and fiscal control matters. The Committee consists of several (up to four) members in good standing of the congregation, serving three year terms, plus the Rector, Senior Warden, Junior Warden and Treasurer.
St. Michael's Fund Board Established in 1999, the St. Michael’s Fund seeks to ensure a firm financial foundation in furtherance of the mission of St. Michael’s Church. The St. Michael's fund typically receives donations from parishioners and bequests from parishioners' estates. Monies in the St. Michael’s Fund are invested with the Trustees of the Funds of the Diocese of Virginia. Board members are appointed by the Vestry and serve five year terms. The Rector, Senior Warden and Junior Warden are ex officio members of the St. Michael's Fund board. For more information, email stmfundcontact@stmichaelsarlington.org.
Buildings and Grounds Committee This committee advises the Vestry on issues dealing with maintenance and repair of the church buildings and rectory, as well as any significant capital projects to the buildings or grounds. At the request of the Vestry, and particularly the Junior Warden, the B&G committee may be involved in determining the content and scope of potential initiatives, assessing the feasibility and cost of projects, securing and evaluating bids, and supervising contractors. For more information, please contact the Junior Warden at juniorwarden@stmichaelsarlington.org.
Mission and Outreach Committee St. Michael's is a generous parish with strong interest in supporting mission and outreach activities in our local community, in other parts of the US, and around the world. This committee advises the Vestry and the church membership on potential initiatives which deserve our support, helps build relationships with groups receiving support, and facilitates the direct involvement of church members in mission and outreach activities. For more on the work of this committee, please see the Mission and Outreach section of this website.
Loaves and Fishes Committee (LAF) LAF plans and directs a large number of parish fellowship activities, ranging from coffee hour following each Sunday service, to receptions for visiting Bishops, to special parish dinners and other events.
